Apulian Bell Krater
A good sized Red-figure Bell Krater decorated with two neatly drawn "Lady-of-Fashion" heads in profile. A krater is an earthenware piece of pottery that was used to mix water with wine. Both profiles are drawn with exquisite features with plentiful use of added white and yellow to create the most splendid profiles of which are rare to find in this state. Both lady's-of-fashion are wearing a radiate stephane and saccos, pendant earrings and a single strand necklace. A laurel decoration surrounds the bottom portion of the lip and the sides are decorated with palmettes. This small krater is absolutely intact with only some minor encrustation. Height: 6 ½ inches Diameter: 5 ½ inches
Due to the style and wonderful rendition of the lady's of fashion this Krater has been attributed to the Darius painter, one of the most prolific painters of the Apulian world.
