Apulian Kantharos
This wonderfully preserved and sophisticated Apulian Kantharos is decorated with a "lady of fashion" on one side and a "flying Eros" on the other. The "lady of fashion" is adorned with a radiate stephane, ribbon sakkos, necklace and earrings. Even greater attention is paid to the flying Eros which is holding a mirror, beaded wreath and slightly hovering over a phiale. Each side is framed by white Ionic columns and the rim of the vessel is decorated by the typically Apulian egg pattern.
The elegant concave handles have been slightly restored and one reattached. Four decorative mouldings act as struts and are shaped in the form of female masks. A leaf is also moulded on the outer area of the high arched handles. The pedestal foot is in three degrees and has a few small ships.
Careful research attributes this piece to the Menzies Group (ca. 375-350 B.C.) See. Maria, Daniels.
