Daunian Stamnoid Krater
Ovoid in form on a flat base, vertical mouth and with two arching handles on either side. This stamnoid krater has wonderfully preserved brown paint surrounding the entire body of the vessel. There is also a band framing curving lines on the lip and vertical bands near the handles. This vessel is absolutely without restoration and the natural pigmented paint is rarely seen surviving in this condition.

The stamnos is generally a wide mouthed vessel with a low caller like neck with horizontal handles set on both sides of the body of the vessel. In Greek the word 'stamnos' is equivalent to the word 'amphora' and as a shape became widely used in Attic ware during the 6th century and in Etruscan during the 4th. Although this piece originates from the Daunian Tribe of central Italy, it has been dated to approximately the 4th century B.C.
