Ancient Egyptian
Pataikos Faience Figure
Pataikos is named from
the writings in
Herodotus describing
Phoenician dwarf-form
protective images. They
may represent a form of
Ptah as craftsman god,
as dwarfs are always
present among the
workers in
precious-metal workshops
in Old Kingdom
depictions. He is seen
as early as the 6th
Dynasty, although widely
produced during the New
Kingdom. In this example,
pataikos is slightly
crouched and with a bare
head. This Dark
Green/Black glazed
faience makes for a rare
and impressive piece.
