Egyptian Mask
It's not often that you run across a piece of ancient art that literally takes your breath away. This is such a piece. My pieces seem to pale in comparison to the beauty of many other examples. Even in determining the price for this piece as it was difficult to find an example in any of the recent Sotheby or Christy catalogs that were nearly as fine. Enough on the accolades, now for the details: Dating to the 26th Dynasty (approximately 600 BC), this mummy mask was carved from a single piece of wood. It was then covered with linen and gesso and painted in vibrant shades of black, white and brick-red. On the back, evidence of the dowel holes where this was attached to the outer sarcophagus are quite evident. This wonderful example measures 17-1/2" L x 10" wide x 4-1/2" D. As seen in the photo, there are small areas where the gesso is missing, but all-in-all this piece is in excellent condition and displays quite wonderfully.
