Rare Egyptian Anthropoid Sarcophagus Lid.
This fabulous and quite rare example of Egyptian art just arrived from Paris, France. I acquired this from a private collector, who had acquired it at auction (famed Drouot) in the early 1990's. This example is a New Kingdom terracotta sarcophagus lid and dates to the 19th/20th Dynasties - between 1307 and 1070 BC - the time of Ramses. Probably from the Sinai, this sarcophagus depicts the deceased with the arms crossed on the chest, each hand holding a lotus flower, with a third lotus flower laying across the crown of the head. The face and ears are modeled in relief with major remains of original pink, white and black pigment. Measures 24" (62 cm) high by approximately 17" wide. For a very similar example, see Christies Auction Catalog, dated June 4, 1999, lot 239. This example was estimated at $7000 - $9000 and sold for $7000. Age crack (stabilized)to right side of head (which can be easily repaired), else quite excellent. Comes mounted on custom museum-grade stand. You are unlikely to run across another! Nice!
