An Ancient Green Faience Ushabti.
We present an impressively large and lovely pale green faience Ushabti, measuring in at 6.6 inches or 16.8 cm high. This figure is wearing a lappet wig, with hands wrapped close to the body holding sulk and hoe. Seemingly ready to perform his intended duties in the afterlife. This Ushabti has a very detailed and attractive face with slight loss to the tip of the nose. It has a very nice hieroglyphic inscription, which dates the figure to the 27th to 30th Dynasties, naming the individual associated with the figure. This piece would make a fine addition to any ancient

An Ushabti pronounced (you-shawb-tee) is a small funerary statue, usually in the form of a mummy and was place with the deceased in his tomb near the sarcophagus. The function of the Ushabti was to carry out any of the tasks that might be required from their master in the afterlife by Osiris, the god of the underworld. Translated, the word Ushabti means "the one who answers".

What is Faience? A paste made of ground sand or quarts with a higher percentage of quartz. The faience paste was then pressed into molds and fired in a kiln. When baked, the quartz based glaze would work its way to the outer surface of the mold thus producing a smooth glassy surface. The colour and quality of the glaze depended on the quantity of impurities found in the paste. Faience Ushabtis were produced in all shapes and sizes and in general the large the piece the higher the status of the individual the piece was commissioned for.
