Ancient Ban Chiang Vessel
Red on buff globular vessel that originates from Northeastern Thailand, Ban Chiang and dates to approximately 3000 B.C. This vessel is in a remarkable state of preservation and has never been cleaned. There is still much of the red pigment surrounding much of the vessel. This piece is dated to roughly the Early Period because of the shape; low footed with flaring rim. What makes this piece distinctly Ban Chiang is the cordmaking technique used to decorate the vessel. ie. a characteristic design and texturing of the surface of the pottery by striking it with twine or cord. The more ornate decorated vessels emerge in the Middle to Early period.
